My Book Haul

There is nothing more satisfying than having money in your wallet and then leaving a bookstore with a bag full of books.  With no money left in your wallet that is.  And no books in your bag when you start.  Except that I usually have a book in my bag even when I go to the bookstore.  I think you understand...

This Weekend, I picked up these books!
Just to clarify, they are:

  • Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
  • Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith
  • Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
  • Messenger by Lois Lowry
  • Son by Lois Lowry
You might have gotten the feeling that I need to finish The Giver series, which is very much true.

However, not only did I get to enjoy my day by getting new books, I also got to start and read a book I won in a contest held on Epic Reads

Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike

Snippet:

Moving to a new high school sucks. Especially a rich-kid private school. With uniforms. But nothing is worse than finding out the first girl you meet is dead. And a klepto.

No one can see or hear Kimberlee except Jeff, so--in hopes of bringing an end to the snarkiest haunting in history--he agrees to help her complete her "unfinished business." But when the enmity between Kimberlee and Jeff's new crush, Sera, manages to continue posthumously, Jeff wonders if he's made the right choice.

Clash meets sass in this uproarious modern-day retelling of Baroness Orczy's The Scarlet Pimpernel.

When I received news that I had won this book, my only thought was Yay! Free book! I had never heard of Pike before, although her series Wings does ring a bell, even though I haven't read it.  I was very excited to get this book, but by the time it did come in the mail my book shelf was full and I was busy reading several other things.

Then last night, I was not getting into the book I had just picked up, so I chose it off my shelf on a whim.  Little did I know I would be reading it practically all the next day!!!

First off, Jeff was a wonderful protagonist.  He was honest and funny and very much a boy.  I think boy points of views are very nice touch in all genres, but especially one like this where among other things, there is a theme of romance.

Kimberly, well, Kimberly was a frustrating character.  I didn't like her, but she was quite vital to the story.

The plot was funny and the story well written but I felt that the whole idea wasn't very original and I was only fairly pleased with the book.

A Great Not Terrible Beauty

Hey readers!  Today I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.  I tried this book a couple months ago, and honestly don't know why I stopped!

Snippet:

A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy--jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel.
Sixteen-year-old Gemma has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother's death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls' academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique. Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions. Nevertheless, they continue, and one night she is led by a child-spirit to find a diary that reveals the secrets of a mystical Order. The clique soon finds a way to accompany Gemma to the other-world realms of her visions "for a bit of fun" and to taste the power they will never have as Victorian wives, but they discover that the delights of the realms are overwhelmed by a menace they cannot control. Gemma is left with the knowledge that her role as the link between worlds leaves her with a mission to seek out the "others" and rebuild the Order.

Review:

As I mentioned before, several months ago I'm pretty sure that I tried this book.  For some reason, which I don't remember, (probably something to do with too many books checked out from the library) I stopped.  I picked it up again a couple weeks ago and have been working it into my busy schedule, which has been extra busy these past couple weeks.

In the very beginning of the book, one of the first things that I noticed was the lovely word language.  One example is on page 13, when Gemma describes her situation by saying, "Panic blooms in my mouth like weeds."  The moment I read it I was in awe, and remember trying to explain it's awesomeness to my friends, none of which really understood.  So I just marked it and decided to share it on here! :)

Another phenomenal example of Bray's wonderful descriptions is on page 24 where she describes Victoria Station.  The entire paragraph is much to long to put in here, but it was one of the best set ups to a scene that I've ever read.  This description was a little less flowery as the quote above, but was beautiful in a wonderfully informative way.

So summed up, the style of writing was very pleasing.

The setting is one of my favorite parts of the book.  It begins with Gemma and her mother living the privileged wealthy life of Brits living in India.  Sadly, this only lasts for a little while before Gemma is whisked to London, where she has always dreamed of going, but not in the way that she has to come now.  The finishing school that she is enrolled in is a little bit cliche; a castle surrounded by Gypsy infested woods and it wasn't presented in the best way,

*SPOILERS*

The setting that I liked the most was definitely "The Realms".  The description of that magical place was pretty and interesting to read about.

The plot was probably the most "so-so" part of the book.  And quite confusing.  I felt that Circe and Mary Dowd were so much more interesting before we actually got to know them.  The mysteriousness was wonderful, but the execution was not so good.  The climax was very much at the end and there wasn't anything that really summed up the story.  Of course there were a few hints to make you want to read the sequel, but I'm not sure I will, because I was a little disappointed with the ending.

P.S.

Libba Bray is also the author of the two sequels; Rebel Angels and The Sweet Far Thing as well as several other books.

The Lunar Chronicals

I haven't posted much about the Lunar Chronicals.  Well, not much after I reviewed the first book in the series last year.  Here's the post about Cinder.

Recently, some updates have come up about the series.

First, the sequel, Scarlett was released February 5th, 2013

Snippet:

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Second, Meyer revealed that the third Installment, Cress is finished and is expected to be published February 4th, 2014.  Cress is based on one of my favorite fairy tales of all time, Rapunzel!!

Third, don't miss Meyer's two e-novella's:

Glitches (A prequel)

and

The Queen's Army
(Which takes place in between Cinder and Scarlett)

I have a copy of Scarlett and hopefully will be reviewing it soon!
